Funding difficulties to force Storefront Learning Center to close its doors later this year

Storefront Learning Center, the downtown alternative high school that often serves as a safety net for at-risk students, has announced that it will close its doors later this year.

The alternative learning center, at 605 1/2 Third St., above Downtown Grocery, is operated as a nonprofit school under the administrative umbrella of the North Central Community Action Program.

The decision to close Storefront was a difficult one, driven by declining funding and a bleak economy, said Mort McBain, president of NCCAP. The community action program used federal community services block grants, ...
