Robert Kaufman, 78, recently celebrated 50 years with the local manufacturing company that was started by his father in 1927 as a two-man tool-and-die shop on North Ninth Street.

But in a Tuesday interview at its current Plant 1 on South 29th Street, the word "retirement" never came up. The president of family owned Kaufman Mfg. Co. is energized that the business, which fabricates custom metal-cutting machines, is part of onshoring or what is sometimes called reshoring.

By whatever name, it's all about bringing back to America manufacturing from overseas and the jobs that go with it. ...
