When instructor Peter Woods teaches math to his students at IDEAS Academy, he says one of his goals is to get students thinking about how to creatively apply mathematics on a daily basis.

In lessons of probability, for example, Woods said he uses casino games to demonstrate concepts and then has his students design games of their own. To teach algorithms, students design stringed instruments and use an algorithm to determine how far apart the frets should be.
