LETTER: Poverty's causes are very complex

Mona Charen, in her syndicated column published Jan. 29, wrote: "Obama's first term created so very much more poverty."

It is without question that there is more poverty than four years ago, especially due to declining wages and lagging unemployment. But the fiscal stimulus, by many estimations, helped to blunt the effects of the recession temporarily, and Obama did propose a number of initiatives to deal with declining wages and unemployment.

These initiatives went nowhere because of overriding concern for fiscal deficits on the part of the Republican House. That the increase in poverty occurred during Obama's first term is true. The causes are more complex, some of them even beyond the power of the President and Congress.

Charen's statement is untrue.
