NEWS ANALYSIS: Some post-Newtown schools are arming security guards

This morning, Jeff Illk will strap on a holster containing a Glock handgun and report to his job as an Emporia High School security guard.

Carrying a weapon is nothing new to Illk, 58, a former city cop, sheriff's deputy and military police officer, but he says the Emporia School Board's unanimous vote Jan. 9 to arm security guards starting Feb. 1 will change his job.

Before the policy change, Illk says, he was "nothing more than a target ?1/8 a target that can't fight back." Now, if an intruder with a weapon ever tries to do harm here, he says, he hopes he'll be able to tell parents, "I made your child ...
