Need for speed fuels ice drag racers

Auto racing is a year-round sport in Wisconsin, and in Merrill, that means the fastest cars are lining up on the ice.

Nearly 30 racers competed Sunday at the Merrill Ice Drags on Lake Alexander at Council Grounds State Park.

The Merrill races have taken place during the course of several weeks in winter since 1965. This year's four-race season has been compressed into just two weeks because of poor ice conditions. The season wraps up with the championships on Saturday. ...
