With a show of support from law enforcement colleagues, Tom Molitor has won the right to become Green Bay's next police chief while living outside the community.

The Green Bay City Council voted Tuesday to grant Molitor an exemption to a city requirement enacted five months ago that all city government department heads must live in Green Bay.

In a hotly debated move involving the city's top law enforcement official, aldermen voted 9-3 to grant the exemption after an earlier motion to deny Molitor's request failed by a narrow 5-7 margin. ...
