Family, pets escape as fire damages home

A town of Wood couple and their pets made it safely out of their house after they discovered it was on fire.

At about 4 a.m. Tuesday, Robert and Debra Kelly, 6976 Polish Road, in the town of Wood, smelled smoke and heard crackling sounds coming from the attic, Pittsville Fire Chief Jerry Minor said. The couple got themselves, their German shepherd and their parakeets out of the home.

Flames were running along the length of the house in the attic space when firefighters arrived, Minor said. Thirty-seven firefighters from the Pittsville, Vesper, Richfield, Arpin, ...
