One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for nonprofit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Personal Essentials Pantry: Volunteers are needed to assist people with choosing from a list of essentials and to fill a bag with the request. Volunteers need to be able to walk some distance.

South Wood County Special Olympics: A volunteer track coach is needed. The volunteer will replace existing coach to teach basic skills. Athletes do running and walking events. They compete at a local meet and the state summer games. This is a well-established team that has operated for the last eight years. Practice is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for 1.5 hours from February to June. Volunteer needs to be capable of teaching skills, and mature enough to understand special needs of athletes. There are programs available to teach coaches and become certified.

The Family Center: The Family Center is in need of several volunteers. Shelter assistants are needed to work with the families who are in residence by helping with any of their immediate physical needs. Responsibilities include listening when clients want to talk, answering phones, responding to crisis calls, logging any information that will help the next person on duty, helping to maintain order and taking in fresh food donations. An environmental services volunteer is needed to clean weekly. Must be 18 or older, able to work alone with little direction, and be able to work with cleaning chemicals. Hours can be flexible. Office assistants alsoare needed.

Opportunity Development Centers: Volunteers are needed to assist employees with disabilities with job completion. This might mean sitting at their workstation giving direction when needed or helping with hands-on contact. This may include collating or counting product, assisting in product assembly or packaging. Because the needs of each individual may be different, the amount of help needed by each may be different. The main and most important requirement is that of confidentiality. Individuals who volunteer must maintain strict confidentiality about the individuals with whom they work. Employees should be treated as adults. Volunteers should be supportive and encouraging, while making use of their talents and abilities to help employees with their work. Any training for specific jobs or machines will be provided by ODC staff.

Vesper Community Academy: Volunteers are needed during the school year to assist with the after school program or during early dismissal days. Volunteers are needed to hold a demonstration or small class session on a talent/interest such a scrapbooking, etc.
