Letter: Olson has best qualities for circuit judge

5:08 PM, Feb. 6, 2013  |  Comments

Manitowoc Municipal Judge Steve Olson is a candidate for Circuit Court judge. I feel strongly about this election. Steve has launched a grassroots campaign, committing to spending no more than $1,000 because he doesn't think big money should win elections.

Steve is a 'salt-of-the-earth' man. I've known him since 1978, when I was a detective and he was a reserve deputy sheriff. He gets to the meat and potatoes of issues quickly. He is a man of faith and has held several leadership positions at Bethany Lutheran Church. Steve worked himself up from a welder, through law enforcement, as a lawyer, and now Manitowoc's municipal judge.

While he was a third shift patrolman, Steve attended law school, commuting to Marquette in Milwaukee during the day. Despite that, Steve graduated in the top 10 percent of his law class! Having known Steve for 35-plus years, I know he will approach cases with a no-nonsense view. He has a solid background in both criminal and civil law and has familiarity with both sides. Steve is the only candidate on the ballot with judicial experience.

Steve has been endorsed by about 45 individuals who have worked with him in various capacities - they spent a collective 1,262 years protecting the public in Manitowoc County! This includes former Manitowoc County Circuit Judge Allan Deehr, former Sheriff Tom Kocourek, and three retired police chiefs. He has been endorsed by four former assistant DA's, two of whom worked under one of Steve's opponents, Mark Rohrer.

The primary is Feb. 19. I urge all to vote for someone who has a unique background and perspective, and has navigated a wide variety of cases from divorces to criminal matters, a man with solid judicial experience, Steve Olson.
