Our View: WinterFest will be a treat for families

We are a hearty people. We keep our driveways and sidewalks shoveled; we go skiing and snowshoeing and biking in the winter.

After a mild, disappointing winter last year, we've had no shortage of opportunities to demonstrate our heartiness in the last few months, which have brought subzero temperatures and plenty of snow.

It is time to celebrate the season.

Wausau Area Events' WinterFest is in its second year, and on Saturday it will be a chance for local families to enjoy a number of the activities that make Wisconsin winter fun. Passersby may have noticed the snow sculpture downtown. There also will be ice skating, carriage rides and a chili cook-off - that last to be held indoors at The Great Hall next to The Grand.

The Ice Tee Classic, a fundraiser for The Neighbors' Place, will take place in conjunction with the event. Folks can try their hand at mini-golf in the snow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Yawkey Park next to the YMCA.

There also will be hot chocolate stations throughout downtown for sweet and warming drinks.

Last year's inaugural event was well attended even though it was very cold that day. This year the forecast for Saturday is a delightful one, with bright sun and temperatures in the 30s. See you there.
