Feb. 8, 1955 - Parking meter issue facing De Pere city council: City fathers will resume their intermittent wrestling match with downtown parking problems next Monday night by taking on a monied contender, Mr. Metered Parking.

The street and bridge committee, it is understood, will recommend to the Council the installation of 350 to 400 parking meters on Broadway, George St. and Main Ave. on a trial basis to supplant the present two-hour free parking schedule.

Metered parking was originally proposed here about five years ago by the late Chief of Police Frank Martin. At public hearings to which businessmen, shoppers from the city and adjacent rural areas, and city officials were invited to express views, it was generally agreed that parking meters were not the answer.

Martin was pretty much alone in contending that the only way to obtain adequate off-street parking facilities was to raise the money on the streets, where the traffic is - through metered parking.
