Appleton teachers anticipated changes to retirement benefits

An Appleton Area School District proposal to cut back on benefits offered to retirees did not come as a surprise to employees.

Chris Heller, a math teacher at Appleton West High School and negotiations chairman for the teacher's union, said he was aware administrators were considering post-retirement benefits changes and worked with Appleton Education Association president Candi Breitengross to communicate the information to employees.

"We understand that the district needs to balance the budget," Heller said. "We understand some changes have to be made." ...
