Are you considering entering the healthcare field? Enhance your resume by earning a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician. UW-Fond du Lac is offering classes which will prepare you for taking the exams to become certified. High school juniors and seniors are eligible to take these classes as well as adults.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a three-credit course starting Mar. 4 and concluding Apr. 30. The class prepares students to take the CNA exam and earn a CNA designation. This course includes classroom, lab practice and clinical experience. Many nursing programs require students to have completed a nursing assistant course with clinical component and have a current CNA certification at the time of application. The classroom section is Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, March 4 to April 1 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. The clinical portion will meet on the same days of the week, April 12-30 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. The course fee is $1,319.67 with credit; and $900 without credit. At time of registration, a $200 non-refundable deposit is necessary to hold your place in the class with the remainder paid in full prior to the start date of the class. A background check is necessary prior to class.
The CNA course will also be offered this summer with the classroom portion meeting May 28-June 7, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the clinicals June 10-21 from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m.
The Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) course begins Mar. 5 and provides necessary training and skills required to sit for the national examination of National Health career Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). This is a 140 hour non-credit program. The CCMA certification exam will be held at UW-Fond du Lac after the classroom coursework is completed. The course runs March 5 through June 6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m.; and clinical externship will be Saturdays (March 16, April 6 and 20; May 4 and 18; and June 1) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A $500 nonrefundable deposit needs to be made at time of registration with the remainder paid in two increments. Total cost is $2,399 including textbooks.
The summer CMA schedule begins June 11 through Sept. 17, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m., with Saturdays, June 22, July 13 and 27, Aug. 10 and 24; and Sept. 7.
The Pharmacy Technician program on Monday and Wednesday evenings begins June 24 through Aug. 12 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Pharmacy Technicians work in pharmacies under the direction of a pharmacist. Their main responsibility is filling prescriptions and preparing medications for dispensing to patients.
