New deer management initiatives from Gov. Scott Walker have the support of hunters, who feel the previous efforts to manage herds have lacked coherence.

Walker stopped in Wausau on Friday to announce deer management initiatives incorporated into the upcoming budget and to meet with members of the National Rifle Association, who were in the Plaza Hotel in Wausau for the annual state convention being held this weekend.

The initiatives include creating new deer mini-hunts as well as providing funding to create updated maps of the state and continuing chronic wasting disease surveillance. ...
