Ag Showcase features apple pie contest

The Fond du Lac Agri-Business Council invites the public to participate in the "All American Apple Pie" contest during the Fond du Lac Agriculture Showcase on Saturday, March 2, at the Fond du Lac County Fairground Recreation Building.

Two rounds of judging will determine the top three apple pies. Co-sponsor Festival Foods will award gift cards for the three top entries. Everyone who submits a recipe will receive a free ticket to the Agriculture Showcase.

Up to 10 recipes will be selected in the first round based on creativity, use of Wisconsin agricultural ingredients and ease of preparation. The finalists will be notified by phone by Friday, Feb. 22. Finalists will prepare the pre-qualified recipe and bring a sample to the Agricultural Showcase on Saturday, March 2, for the final judging.

Entry forms are available at www.fdlac.com or can be requested by calling 921-9500. Deadline for recipes is Friday, Feb. 15. Typed entries must be mailed or hand delivered to the Association of Commerce at 207 N. Main St., Fond du Lac, WI 54935.

Maple Syrup Clinic Offered

CHILTON - Do you want to learn about making maple syrup? Meuer Farm in Chilton is hosting "Making Maple Syrup" clinics from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9.

Hands-on training will include tapping trees, sap collection, boiling, filtering and bottling. Cost of the clinic is $30 per person which include handouts, training and lunch. For more information, call 418-2676 or send an email to meuerfarm@gmail.com.

Processed Vegetable Growers Clinic Set for Feb 19

LOMIRA - The annual Processed Vegetable Growers clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Lomira Legion Hall. The program offers an opportunity for producers, processors, educators and crop professionals to discuss current issues, new technology and improved production practices.

Cost of the program is $10 per person which includes lunch and materials. Pre-registration is required and can be done by contacting the Fond du Lac County UW-Extension office at 929-3171. Registration and program information is also available at www.uwex.edu/ces/crops/2013ProcVegClinic.pdf.

Beef Cook-Off seeks recipes

MADISON - The Wisconsin Beef Council is calling on home cooks to share their favorite healthy beef menu ideas in the 30th National Beef Cook-Off. Wisconsin cooks can submit recipes online until April 15 at www.beefcookoff.org for a chance to win $25,000 and a trip to the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show in Washington D.C.

This year's contest theme is "Making the Most of MyPlate." Entrants are asked to develop original beef-focused recipes that include ingredients from the food groups specified in the MyPlate initiative led by the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.

Categories include belt-tightening beef recipes; semi-homemade beef recipes; real worldly, real simple beef and potato recipes; and craveable fresh beef and California avocado recipes.
