Increased responsibility cause for higher per diem amounts

Costs cover food, lodging expenses for lawmakers

Two local lawmakers were at opposite ends of the 2012 legislative per diem reimbursement claims released last week.

Rep. Scott Suder, R-Abbotsford, led his state Assembly colleges after he received $13,112 in 2012 for the 149 days he was in Madison. Only Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, received more in per diem last year, after he received $14,608.

The claims cover food and lodging expenses while lawmakers are in Madison doing state business. Those who live in Dane County can get $44 a day, while the rest receive $88 a day while in Madison above their annual salaries. ...
