VFW Auxiliary 6352

The Stratford VFW/Auxiliary Post 6352 held contests for the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen.

Emma Dimick, a seventh-grade student at Auburndale Junior High School placed first at the Post/Auxiliary level and also placed first at the 7th District level. Andrea Wenzel placed first for the Voice of Democracy at the Post/Auxiliary level and also placed first at the 7th District. Cindy Beranek was awarded Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year-High School level for the 7th District. The winners were honored in Plover on Jan. 27 during the 7th District winter meeting.

MAREA

A recent meeting of the Marshfield Area Retired Educators' Association was held Jan. 21, with President Mary Denk presiding.

A report on the pension was given by Kathleen Hasenohrl, with information provided by Larry Perrodin.

Shari Stangl read a thank you from the Stratford Community Food Pantry for donations received. This month's donations plus $50 will be delivered to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Marshfield by Joan Zoellner. Next month, donations will go to CUP in Colby.

President Mary Denk and Carol Ely did a demonstration of the MAREA blog on the WREA website. To reach it, go to http://wrea.net, click on Links, then click 3J Marshfield Area REA.

Carol Subera, District III director, reported on the WREA board of directors meeting held recently. Ruby Pinter reported the local MAREA scholarship applications have been sent to the 10 schools that the club represents. They are Abbotsford, Athens, Colby, Edgar, Marathon, Marshfield, Mosinee, Pittsville, Spencer and Stratford. They are due March 25. Instead of having a fundraiser, a collection will be taken in February and April in order to reach the club goal of $500.

Discussion was held about changing our by-laws to eliminate the January meeting, starting in 2014. This vote will be taken at the February meeting.

The January speaker was Tony Schultz from Athens. He talked about organic farming and his Stoney Acres Farm.

The next MAREA meeting will be Feb. 18 at Country Aire, Stratford. All retired educators, administrators and support personnel are invited to attend. The speaker will talk about the 10 signs of Alzheimer's disease.
