The Buffalo Bills cut linebacker Nick Barnett today, though at his age it probably is a stretch to think the Green Bay Packers will try to re-sign him.

Barnett, who played for the Packers from 2003 to 2010, had decent statistics last season as the Bills’ starting weak-side linebacker: a team-leading 112 tackles, two sacks and three forced fumbles.

But he also will be 32 in May and was scheduled to make $3.5 million this season..

“Moves like the ones we’ve made today are never easy,” Bills general manager Buddy Nix said in a written statement released by the team, “but we have to do what's best for our team and keep moving forward. We’ve got some good young players on our roster who we feel are ready to take the next step and they will now have the opportunity to do so. We thank both Nick and George (Wilson, a safety also cut) for everything they’ve given the Bills organization and wish them nothing but the best for the future.”
