High school sports events to watch this week

Wrestling: Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal at Ellsworth team sectional tonight, 6 p.m.: N/G/L won the Abbotsford/Colby Division 2 regional last weekend and with the victory is a pair of dual wins away from heading to the WIAA team state tournament. If N/G/L gets past Ellsworth in the semifinals, it will face the winner of Amery vs. Rice Lake in the final at 8 p.m. Jared Boon (120), Phillip Opelt (126), Michael Chadwick (138) and Mitchell Pohlman (160) all won individual regional titles in their respective weight classes for N/G/L.

Boys hockey playoffs: Medford at Marshfield, tonight, 7 p.m.: The Marshfield boys hockey team seek a surprise tournament run, but will get a home playoff game against No. 10 seed Medford. The Tigers are paced by the Leggon brothers - Bobby and Zach - who are the teams top scorers. Bobby has already set the school record for goals in a season with 25 and has 37 points, while Bobby finished the regular season with 30 points.

Girls hockey playoffs: Lakeland at Marshfield, Friday, 7 p.m.: The Tigers hope to start a long and prosperous playoff run against the Thunderbirds. A week ago the Tigers blasted the T-Birds 7-1. Marshfield received a No. 3 seed and if they get past the No. 6 seeded Lakeland will likely face another Great Northern Conference foe Northland Pines. In two games against Pines, Marshfield has tied the Eagles 2-2 and lost 4-1. Marshfield are led by Paige Johnson, who has amassed 52 points this season, including goals.

Gymnastics: Great Northern Conference Tournament at SPASH, 11 a.m., Saturday: SPASH will look to defend its Great Northern Conference Large Division championship against Ashland, Antigo, Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids. The Tigers are led by Olivia Tierney, who has consistently been in the top 5 in the GNC all-around all season long.
