Voices of Storefront: Teachers gave me the attention I needed to excel

I attended Storefront Learning Center for two years and graduated in 2007. Without Storefront, I don't think I would have graduated.

I had a rough time in public school with the other students and my own medical issues. The teachers assumed I was a bad kid and was just skipping school all the time, when actually I was at home in excruciating pain.

I was very nervous when I first enrolled in Storefront. I had heard it was where all the bad kids go. Once I started there I realized a lot of these kids were just misunderstood, like I was.

Storefront was the best thing that ever happened to me. The teachers there cared about us and wanted to help us succeed. I went from a 0.23 grade-point average to a 3.9 GPA in less than a year. I loved it there so much that I actually chose to go to summer school because I couldn't stand the thought of being away for a whole summer. Teachers there will always have a special place in my heart. With them I was able to succeed.

Editor's note: "Voices of Storefront" are reader-submitted stories of how Wausau's Storefront Learning Center has chnaged the lives of those who were involved with it. The school is seeking to raise $50,000 in order to stay open long enough for 11 of its 23 students to graduate.

To donate, call the school at 715-842-7556 or North Central Community Action Program at 715-842-0681, or search for the "Save Storefront fundraising planning" event on Facebook.
