Krauthammer portrayal of Obama incorrect

Charles Krauthammer's column Jan. 24 was an exercise in distortion and name-calling. By my count, it included over 20 emotionally loaded words and phrases like "left-liberal manifesto" and "reactionary liberalism." Krauthammer displays the serious blindness of today's conservative Republican leadership. He defines "left" and "liberal" to be anything and anyone that disagrees with him.

In his attempt to portray President Barack Obama as a radical outside the American mainstream, he is simply incorrect. On every issue that the president put forward, there is a majority of the American people who favor it. On some, the majority is huge. For example, a recent poll shows that about three-fourths of Americans support regulating greenhouse gas emissions to combat global warming. Over two-thirds of Americans oppose cuts to the funding of Medicaid. Even a slim majority of conservative Republicans (outside of D.C.) oppose cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

The Republican Party that Krauthammer represents here is still baffled by their losses in the 2012 election. They would rather believe that they have been misunderstood and misquoted by the media. The fact is that most Americans live in the middle, and that is exactly where the president is leading us.
