Mayor not helping homeless situation

Mayor Jim Schmitt has the responsibility to provide leadership and guidance to councils/commissions who represent the people of Green Bay.

The issue of our cities' homeless has been on the table for years. A viable solution from New Community Shelter was presented to the City Council several years ago only to be denied.

To ensure homeless would have shelter during the winter months Deacon Timothy Reilly provided shelter through St. John the Evangelist.

Tuesday, I read that Schmitt called Reilly "disrespectful and dishonest" and "Reilly is more concerned with raising funds and making headlines than improving the service for the homeless." It takes a building, utilities and a team to run a shelter. The money raised by Reilly has helped house the homeless.

The homeless issue is a city issue that has been ignored. Schmitt has tried to control every aspect of St. John's shelter and has not brought any solutions to the table. Maybe Schmitt should look in the mirror and question his integrity and motive.

Thank you Deacon Tim and St. John's for helping the homeless.
