One of central Wisconsin's largest employers is planning to lay off 300 people as part of a companywide reduction, a local spokesman for the Ohio-based papermaker said Tuesday.

NewPage Corp., which operates eight paper mills - including three in central Wisconsin, where it employs about 1,700 people - also will cut $20 million in nonpersonnel costs, local spokesman Cliff Bowers said. Declining demand in the paper industry led to the cost-cutting measures, he said.
