MILWAUKEE -- One of four founding members of Tombstone Pizza, and a former owner of the Embassy Suites/Regency Suites Hotel of Green Bay, died in Milwaukee Monday at the age of 86.
Joseph "Pep" Simek, had been a patient at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee for two weeks before he died, according to his obituary. Funeral services for the Ogema native are planned for Saturday in Medford.
Following his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Simek worked a number of jobs and moved to the Medford area in 1960 where he was a co-owner and bartender at Tombstone Tap. In 1962, he and three others founded Tombstone Pizza. He served as CEO and chairman of the board for Tombstone Pizza until its sale in 1986.
He then bought the Embassy Suites/Regency Suites Hotel in Green Bay in 1987, according to Press-Gazette archives. He sold the business to LodgeWorks in early 2007.
Simek, who had a host of business ventures to his name, is survived by three children, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers,. His wife, Frances, died in 2010.
