Barbre's combine record falls in 40-yard dash

Feb. 23, 2013

Allen Barbre never lived up to hype, but the fact still remained he ran the fastest 40-yard dash time for an offensive linemen in NFL combine history in 2007.

Well, that changed on Saturday.

The former Green Bay Packers’ offensive lineman record of 4.84 seconds at the event fell at the hands of Arkansas Pine-Bluff’s Terron Armstead, whose 6-foot-5, 306-pound frame demolished Barbre’s mark in an official time of 4.71 seconds after being clocked at 4.65 seconds unofficially.

Barbre’s record actually fell twice on Saturday with Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson, a projected first-rounder, also finishing in 4.72 seconds officially.

The Packers drafted Barbre in the third round in 2007, but was released after 25 games spread across three unproductive seasons. The 28-year-old lineman is still trying to carve out an NFL career after being recently signed by Philadelphia following short stints with Seattle and Miami.

A former shot-put thrower, Armstead has been lauded for his athleticism and was projected by NFLDraftScout.com as a potential third-round pick with his 40-yard dash only serving to further ignite his draft stock.

How that translates to the NFL is another question.

“I’ve been blessed with a unique skill-set,” said Armstead on Thrusday. “I’m extremely light on my feet for a big guy, I have to say. It’s a blessing. It was nothing that was coached.”
