The year was 1943. I was five years old. We just moved to 525 Grand Avenue. I called him Ferdie because everyone else did. His real name was Larry. When he was born, his dad called him Ferdie because his mother's name was Isabella and at the time Spain had a Queen Isabella and a King Ferdinand - the name stuck.

Ferdie lived one block from our house, on Custer, right next to the railroad tracks. His house shook something awful when a train went by. The house didn't have running water and the toilet was a two-seater outdoor crapper, located in the back of an old shack of a garage.
