Wisconsin Public Service Corp. on Friday received approval to buy the Fox Energy Center natural gas-fired power plant near Kaukauna.

The state Public Service Commission granted the $440 million deal, which WPS announced in October 2012 and expects to close about April 1.

Green Bay-based WPS has been buying electricity from the 593-megawatt power plant since it went into operation in 2005.

WPS will pay $390 million for the plant and $50 million to end its power purchase contract. The plant is owned by subsidiaries of GE and Tyr Energy.
