The instructions, though well explained, were spoken in German. I was to heed these directions carefully while assisting in the birth of a Austrian calf, set to take place in the very immediate future. I was a WWOOFing volunteer. And, as I stood at the business end of that round-bellied heiffer (awaiting the arrival of said calf), my mind pondered how it was that I came to be there at all.
