Plover wildlife area in line for expansion

The most extensive grassland east of the Mississippi River begins a few miles south of the village of Plover.

Called the Buena Vista Wildlife Area, the 12,700-acre project also is home to the largest concentration of Greater Prairie Chicken in the state, according to the Department of Natural Resources, which recommended adding another 80 acres to the project Wednesday.

"This is a highly desirable parcel for us to acquire," said Kris Johansen, Buena Vista's wildlife supervisor. "It's been managed as grassland for years and utilized by prairie chickens (a state threatened species.)" ...
