Canty to visit Packers on Wednesday

Mar. 1, 2013

Defensive end Chris Canty will visit the Packers next Wednesday and Thursday, agent Brad Blank confirmed today.

Canty, 30, was cut by the Giants this offseason. He reportedly met with the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs before the NFL scouting combine, and the Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly are interested in him also, though has not set up a visit there.

Canty at 6-feet-7 and 317 pounds has prototypical size for an end in the Packersí 3-4 defense. The Packers are looking to upgrade their defensive line regardless and also probably wonít have 2012 second-round pick Jerel Worthy for at least half the 2013 regular season and perhaps all year after he underwent knee reconstruction surgery in January.

Itís unclear how big a contract Canty will command with the handful of teams trying to sign him. When the Giants released him after last season, Canty had two seasons left on a six-year deal that averaged $7 million a year and was to pay him $6.25 million in 2013. But considering his age and injuries last season, his next contract presumably will be for a significantly lower salary. He missed seven games last season because of knee and groin injuries, and finished the year with three sacks and 26 tackles.

The Packers have about $21 million in salary cap room, but that doesnít mean they have a lot of money for free agents. Their priority this year is signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers, outside linebacker Clay Matthews and defensive lineman B.J. Raji to ultra-expensive contract extensions.
