Students in Jodi Tuskowski's third-grade class at Washington Elementary School recently raised more than $700 to support the local Books from the Heart program and the Newtown, Conn., adopt-a-pet project. They raised the funds through their Cupid's Corner project where students, staff and parents purchased Valentine gifts made by the students.

The project began with students requesting a start-up loan of $350 from the school PTO. The PTO granted the request and the students signed a promissory note saying the loan would be repaid from the profits. The students then formed six business ...
