The 2013 Great Lakes shipping season got under way Saturday when the tug and barge Prentiss Brown and St. Mary's Conquest left winter lay-up in Milwaukee and sailed to Charlevoix, Mich.

The vessel took on a load of 9,200 tons of cement in Charlevoix for delivery to Chicago.

More cargo moved Monday when the tug and barge Dorothy Ann and Pathfinder moved 13,000 tons of iron ore to a steel mill on the Cuyahoga River in Ohio, according to the Lakes Carriers' Association.

The shipping season on the Great Lakes - including to the Port of Green Bay - gets under way in earnest in the next month.
