University of Wisconsin halfback Montee Ball might have undone some of the damage from his slow 40-yard dash time at the NFL scouting combine.

At the combine, Ball ran the 40 in 4.66 seconds, which is unusually slow for a top prospect at his position and raised red flags about whether he should be a late first-round prospect.

However, at Wisconsinís Pro Day on Wednesday, Ball appears to have run faster. His best time varied, depending on the source, from 4.48 seconds to 4.57 seconds. Assuming the slower time is more accurate, thatís still nearly a tenth of a second faster than his time from the combine.

At some schools, the players run on a surface thatís faster than the FieldTurf at the combine in Indianapolis, so teams adjust the Pro Day times for comparison. However, Wisconsin isnít one of those schools.

Several reports speculated as to why Bell ran better this time. Ball told reporters at the workout that he had a sinus infection at the combine. Also, one report said that some players at the combine wear out or even slightly injure their legs in the Cybex strength testing conducted earlier in the day they run the 40, and that possibly happened to Ball.

Going into the combine, some scouts considered Ball as high as a late first-round pick, though others had him as a second- or third-round prospect. The back with the best chance of being selected in the first round probably is Alabamaís Eddie Lacy.

The Packers have the No. 26 pick overall and likely are considering a running back among the positions they might take with that selection.
