USDA secretary: Economic uncertainty ripples outside of ag

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilasck says uncertainty in the farm sector generated by across-the-board cuts in Washington, and the lack of a five-year farm program, are likely to ripple through the wider domestic economy.

The government is facing mandatory cuts - called sequestration - that kicked in March 1. Vilsack said various programs in the agriculture department face potential cuts and slow downs, ranging from conservation programs to completion of the 2012 U.S. Census of Agriculture.

Vilsack said uncertainty in the farm sector reaches into other segments of the economy. ...
