Saputo Cheese USA Inc. was fined $40,000 for allowing untreated wastewater to overflow into a tributary of the Little River in November 2009.

According to the state Attorney General's Office, a lift station pump at the cheese-making plant failed, causing Saputo to violate its water discharge permit.

Saputo will pay mandatory court costs, surcharges and attorney fees.

Saputo cooperated with the state Department of Natural Resources to ensure compliance with the permit, the Attorney General's Office said.
