When Jane Cryan bought her very first house, she decided on a 1946 Cape Cod-style home on Oshkosh's Western Street. It was a gift to herself, for her 65th birthday.

What she wasn't counting on was all the repairs that the house would require - and that they would cost her more than she had in her retirement savings. The first problem presented itself when the plumbing started to fail. Then she learned that the 32-year-old furnace was costing her "an arm and a leg to operate."

When winter came, ice formed on the insides of the windows - original from 1946 - and the inside door got "so cold you could freeze ...
