A few days ago, in Southern California, Dan Jaeger raised a toast.

His father, Earl Jaeger, a longtime track and cross-country coach and teacher at Sheboygan Central and Sheboygan South high schools, had died less than two weeks earlier - just shy of his birthday.

"I said, 'My dad would have been 92 today,'" Dan said in a phone interview Tuesday morning from his office in Simi Valley, Calif., recalling the toast he gave with a friend a few days earlier. "'Can you imagine, he'd go to school and teach all day long, then he'd go coach for a couple hours, then he'd come home to that house with seven kids.' ? ...
