Amherst boys lose state semifinal

The Amherst boys basketball team got a late start to the season after capturing a state football championship.

The group gelled quickly, but on Thursday night its season came to a close 49-29 in a WIAA Division 4 state semifinal at the hands of Auburndale. Auburndale used a suffocating defense to hold Amherst to just 29 percent shooting for the game.

"We had missed 20-some practices and we had to skip a lot of things," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said of how the football team's success impacted basketball. "We lost a close game in our first game and I thought, 'Holy cow, we aren't going to go .500.' ...
