Girls basketball: Algoma, Kewaunee capture regional titles

A day after one of her grandfathers died, Algoma senior Taylor Schmidt (10) did what she's done all year: play basketball at a very high skill level. Schmidt ? chosen as the Packerland Conference Player of the Year ? led the Wolves to the Div. 4 regional championship with strong defense, scoring and passing. She's shown driving against Weyauwega-Fremont star senior Jenni Hellweg.

The top-seeded girls basketball squads at Algoma and Kewaunee breezed through their first two stops on the journey to the WIAA State Basketball Tournament. On their ways they picked up some souvenirs for the trophy cases - regional championship plaques.

Algoma passed Bonduel 54-38 and Weyauwega-Fremont 68-44. Kewaunee flew by Chilton and Denmark with 20-point-plus victories in both games: 43-21 and 60-27.Lockdown Storm defense wins the day
