Boy Scout Troop 601 learns survival skills

On March 2, the Boy Scouts of Troop 601 spent the day learning winter wilderness survival skills. The Scouts were given the scenario that they were separated from the Troop and would need to survive a winter evening until daylight arrived and they could find their way back. The focus was on shelter and heat.

Enthusiastic Scouts immediately began building Quinzhee's (similar to an igloo) to shelter themselves from the wind. After piling up snow, the Scouts improved on their fire-building skills. Each Scout built their own fire, boiled water over it, and prepared their own lunch. The afternoon was spent digging out the Quinzhee's and making them functional to sleep in overnight.

The goal of the outing was to develop self-confidence and self-reliance - mission accomplished!
