Police hope to reunite more owners with lost, stolen bikes

They will be waiving the bike registration fees so that bikes can be recovered and returned to their owners if found.

Oshkosh Police hope a 45-day waiver of bicycle registration fees in the city will help increase the number of lost or stolen bikes that can be returned to their owners.

At any given time, about half of a 40-by-50-foot storage facility on Third Avenue is filled with bicycles were either been stolen or found abandoned. Most of the time police have no idea who the bikes belong to because they aren't registered.

The Oshkosh Police Department recovered 809 bikes from 2009 through 2011.Police were only able to return 47, or 6 percent, to their rightful owners, all of whom had previously registered the ...
