A recent Press-Gazette Media editorial recommended increasing the fine for not wearing a seat belt from the current $10 fine to something much higher. I am opposed to this due to the double standard regarding seat belts and motorcycle helmets. Whereas automobile drivers are legally required to wear their seat belts, motorcycle riders can legally ride around without their helmets on even though wearing those helmets would greatly decrease the number of motorcycle fatalities and severe head trauma. Wearing seat belts and wearing motorcycle helmets should either both be mandatory or both be voluntary. But as long as this double standard that favors motorcyle riders remains in place, the fine for not wearing seat belts should remain at $10.
