Chances are, if you've tried parking downtown during lunch hour, you've hedged your bets in a metered stall. Chances are that you also have gotten a ticket for it.

Of the 9,000 tickets the Wausau Police Department issued in 2012, nearly half of the tickets came from expired meters in downtown municipal parking lots. Another 1,262 came from overtime parking - cars that stayed in a stall longer than the allotted time - and 1,537 were given out to cars parked on the wrong side of the street from 2:30 a.m. to 6 a.m., according to a Daily Herald Media review of city parking ticket records.
