A day after rolling the dice by putting the lowest restricted free agent tender on center Evan Dietrich-Smith, the Packers took no such risk with cornerback Sam Shields.

An NFL source told the Press-Gazette this morning that the Packers put the second-round tender on Shields, who was perhaps the teamís best cover man last season.

The second-round tender will pay Shields $2.023 million in 2013 unless another team signs him to an offer sheet. The Packers would have the opportunity to match that offer. If not, they would receive a second-round pick from the team that signs him. Shields entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Had the Packers put the low tender on Shields, another team could have signed him without giving up any compensation. Thatís the situation theyíre in with Dietrich-Smith, who also entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent. The low tender is worth $1.323 million.

The Packers have three other restricted free agents: tight end Tom Crabtree and linebackers Robert Francois and Frank Zombo. If the Packers are going to offer them tenders, they must do so before free agency starts today at 3 p.m. They may opt not to tender them and try to re-sign them at a lower price.
