In response to the Feb. 24 story on Green Bay's homeless situation. I was shocked to learn that we have actually have a team of people working on this problem. Mostly because it keeps getting worse. I sincerely hope these people are not getting paid for this mediocre performance.
Here is my proposal to the problem. The former Brown County mental hospital has been sitting vacant for the last several years and is now scheduled for demo. A project that will cost tax payers over $2 milloin. This is a beautiful and historic building dating back to the late 1880s. Why are we not trying to save this history? We could easily preserve this gem by turning part of it into a shelter. Other parts of the building could be used for county storage, other types of shelter, etc.
Yes, yes, I can hear the "no funding" excuse right now and I don't even want to hear that garbage because we all just learned that Northeast Wisconsin spends millions a year housing and feeding violent sex offenders. Why are these criminals living well while our homeless suffer? This is shameful. I are you listening, Mayor Schmitt?
