It's Your Call

NAME GAME: Political organizations pushing private school vouchers into northeast Wisconsin are working very hard to cloak themselves as a choice program. The use of "choice" to describe attempts to expand government into private schools is deceptive because a legitimate school choice program - called open enrollment - already exists for every family in this state, and it's a program that's flourishing. Open enrollment allows families to truly choose from among neighboring districts, schools within a district or, increasingly, well-regarded, special-focus charter schools - all accountable to locally elected leaders. A government expansion in which our local tax dollars are siphoned off to pay for private school tuition would inevitably weaken neighborhood schools and a highly successful choice program that already works.
