As white smoke emerged from the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, cathedral bells rang at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in downtown Green Bay.

The 266th pope, Jorge Mario Bergolio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, chose Francis as his papal name in honor of St. Francis of Assisi because of the saint's commitment to the poor.
