Free-agent running back Steven Jackson is signing with the Atlanta Falcons, and not the Green Bay Packers, according to a report by ESPN.
The Packers had been in contract talks with Jackson for the last couple of days, but the Falcons apparently were willing to pay him more than the Packers, though contract details were not immediately available.
The Falcons were looking for a new primary halfback after cutting MIchael Turner in the offseason.
The Packers thought Jackson could significantly upgrade their running game, but general manager Ted Thompson likely would only go so far with his offer for a player who is getting old for his position. Jackson turns 30 in July.
The Packers still presumably are in the running to re-sign receiver Greg Jennings, though Jennings is visiting the Minnesota Vikings today. Jackson and Jennings have the same agent, Eugene Parker.
