Notre Dame will see new opponent in D2 title game

No rematch with New London for Tritons after New Berlin Eisenhower ends streak

Mar. 15, 2013

ASHWAUBENON After winning its state semifinal game on Friday, Green Bay Notre Dame senior Brianna Byrne said she wanted another crack at the New London squad that ended her teamís season last year in the semifinals.

But somebody else beat the Tritons to it.

New Berlin Eisenhower ended New Londonís 68-game winning streak with a 48-47 victory to advance to the WIAA Division 2 state championship game for a third time in four years.

It was sweet revenge for an Eisenhower squad that lost to the Bulldogs in the D2 championship last year.

Despite graduating Nicole Bauman, who was Wisconsinís Miss Basketball last year and now playing for the University of Wisconsin, the Lions have maintained their dominance during a 25-2 campaign.

Eisenhower returns three starters from last yearís runner-up team, including Winona State (Minn.) recruit Jenny Weiland, who scored a team-high 17 points in rallying against New London on Friday.

Eisenhower coach Gary Schmidt expects another close game against Notre Dame on Saturday.

ďI think itís going to be probably another white-knuckler,Ē Schmidt said. ďIím hoping that weíll be a little bit prepared and donít get ourselves over 15 or 17 down (like we did) today.Ē

Schmidtís biggest concern is Notre Dame junior and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit Allie LeClaire, who had 14 points and five assists in a 61-35 rout of Milton on Friday.

ďObviously, I think they go if she goes,Ē Schmidt said. ďI think the one thing we do is we both match-up well against each other, so again I think itís going to be a really good game.Ē

The Tritons will be playing in their first title game since finishing as the D2 runner-up in 2005 and going after its first title since 2001.
